Pumpkin Patch Near Chicago: Great Foods You Can Make Using Pumpkins! Part One

This year at Bengtson’s Pumpkin Fest, we’ve covered quite a bit of ground in our series of posts that have hopefully set you up for success this holiday season. Of course, most all of our writing has been committed toward the chief topic of our pumpkin patch and farm here in Homer Glen. We’ve spent a good deal of time describing how this year at Bengtson’s Pumpkin Fest is the biggest and best yet. Not only do we have a brand new lineup of rides, but we’ve also got more days of the least expensive rates we’ve ever offered. But we’ve gone beyond just telling our readers about why our pumpkin farm is likely the best that they’ll find in all of the Midwest, if not further (if we do say so ourselves). We’ve provided you with some excellent ideas for Halloween decorations, talked about weird and fun facts about Halloween, shown you how to carve a pumpkin, and even described some of the best carnival foods from around the globe! All that to say, we are getting back to the heart and soul of the conversation in this post, the pumpkin. Specifically, we are going to take a look […]

How To Make A Ghost, And Other Halloween Ideas!

We are much more than your average (near) Chicago pumpkin patch. In light of the fact that we’ve been around for 37 years now, we’ve been improving and expanding our reach beyond being a regular old pumpkin farm. That’s not to say that there’s anything wrong with being a regular old pumpkin farm. If we didn’t enjoy bringing generations of families fun we wouldn’t still be around here in Homer Glen. We love doing what we do, but one of the ways that it stays fun for us is that we make an effort to challenge ourselves to new heights every year. Sometimes those improvements are dazzling, like our new Barnyard Dance Cow Coaster. It’s a big hit so far this year, with the spinning cow train being great for pretty much all ages. It’s a smooth ride, and little kids love it because it’s not over-the-top intimidating, plus you get to ride in a cow-car. What kid doesn’t want to ride in a cow-car? Check out a video of the Barnyard Dance Cow Coaster in the link above! Our Pumpkin Patch But sometimes that improvement means having a renewed focus on things we’ve been doing for a long time. […]

Pumpkin Festival Near Me: Highlighting Various Cultures’ Festival Food

In our previous recent posts, we’ve taken a look into the world of carnival food. We will be honest about our experience looking into carnival food from around the world and at home. There are a lot of traditions and carnivals, and food that goes along with each – many more than we realized. It’s not that we underestimated the breadth of the topic necessarily, but more that we were just intending on talking about some classic American carnival foods (because we serve a good deal of them, like kettle corn, caramel apples, cotton candy, etc.) and ended up becoming really interested in what the rest of the world is doing when it comes to seasonal celebrations! That said, many of the “carnival” celebrations we have already highlighted don’t have too much in common with our nation’s reason for autumnal celebration. Many of the carnivals highlighted have to do with holy week, a Catholic tradition, or have a different reason altogether. But since when do you need it to be fall, the USA, or even need there to be a pumpkin festival to have a reason for celebrating? For us at Bengtson’s Pumpkin Farm, you don’t have to have a […]

This is the “pumpkin farm near me” you’ve been searching for, and it has all of the kiddie rides, non-kiddie rides and attractions, and carnival food you could ever dream of. In light of our last post about American carnival foods and their origins, we thought we would carry on with this fall festival theme and take a look at the variety of carnival food dishes around the world. Of course, we won’t be able to be comprehensive in this list, but we still thought it would be fun […]

How To Carve A Pumpkin

In one of our most recent posts, we took the time to explain some of Halloween’s historical origins with regards to pumpking carving and jack-o-lanterns. The long and short of the story is that we’ve adopted traditions of the ancient Celts, and later, the Irish. They used hollowed out turnips and gourds and carved them out to make faces on them, which would supposedly help ward off unwelcome spirits roaming around during the night. As time passed and most superstitions died out, squash carving became less practical and more fun. When the Irish and other European settlers came over to North America, they were introduced to the ideal squash for pumpkin carving. With our snazzy new oversized gourds, we Americans have taken the fun parts of carving and ran with them. Pumpkin carving is now one of the exciting parts about this time of year, and is a great reason to come on out to Bengtson’s Pumpkin Fest near Chicago. We’ve got an Illinois pumpkin patch like you wouldn’t believe, plus so much more, like carnival food, amazing food trucks, tons of rides, shows, and other attractions, and so much more. We’ve been open for 37 years here at our […]

5 Facts You Probably Didn’t Know About Fall Activities Like Pumpkin Patches and Halloween

Here at Bengtson’s Pumpkin Farm, we’re all about fun. So while you might learn a few things while you’re at our pumpkin patch, here are some fun facts that just aren’t brought up enough. Americans Spend a Lot of Money on Halloween Halloween has become one of the most expensive holidays for Americans. It ranks just after Christmas for money expenditures, with American spending about $6 billion (that’s billion with a “B”) every year. This includes the costumes, decorations, and fun fall attractions like the ones you’ll find at our pumpkin patch. (Our rides are free once you’re in the door, though!) Why Are Pumpkins Orange? Not all pumpkins are orange, just as not all apples are red. Some pumpkins are white, others are red, blue, or yellow. Traditional orange pumpkins change color from green to orange for much the same reason that leaves do. When they lose their chlorophyll, the “underlying” orange color is revealed. The orange color is caused by carotenoids, a healthy source of vitamin A and the same thing that makes carrots orange. What Is Samhainophobia? Scientist have a name for just about every phobia out there, don’t they? Samhainophobia is a deathly (AH!) fear of […]

They’ll be taking hayrides behind real tractors that are used in farming, and they’ll meet a great variety of […]

Things To Do With A Rotten Pumpkin Once The Fall Activities in the Chicagoland Area Are Done

When October 31 is here and Bengtson’s has closed for the season, we’ve said goodbye to thousands of pumpkins as they’ve been taken to homes all across the Chicago area. Those that aren’t made into pie will be turned into jack-o-lanterns and used as decorations. But all real pumpkins go bad eventually, and you’ll have to do something with them. Here are some tips for what to do with a rotten pumpkin. Plan Ahead! Those of you who are extra-crafty can actually incorporate the decomposition process into your pumpkin art. As your jack-o-lantern gets less and less structurally sound, the face can start to “melt” and create an even scarier decoration for Halloween! Compost It! One of the most obvious uses for a pumpkin is as compost. If you compost at home, chuck it into the composter and let the rot that started on your porch continue in the composter. Heck, let the kids hasten the decomposition process by letting them hit it with a hammer of chopping it with a shovel. It’s constructive destruction! (Many recycling centers will also take pumpkins with grass clippings and leaves.) Leave It Out! A decomposing pumpkin is an at-home science project. If you […]

How to Roast Pumpkin Seeds

When you visit our pumpkin patch, you are sure to come away with a pumpkin or two (or twenty!) that you want to carve. That means cleaning out the inside of your pumpkin. If you’ve always tossed the seeds along with the pulp that you remove, you might want to consider saving those seeds! Roasted pumpkin seeds are a delicious autumn treat and super easy to make at home. Follow These Steps! Rinse your seeds. You’ll want to get all of the “guts” of the pumpkin off of your seeds. Put them into a colander and run cool water over them to rinse them off. Swish them around with your hands to remove all of the strings of the pumpkin. Dry them out. Spread your pumpkin seeds out on an oiled baking sheet and place in a 300-degree oven for 30 minutes. Some people flip their seeds, but we’ve found that they’ll dry just fine without turning or tossing them. Find your favorite flavors. Now comes the fun part! You can flavor your pumpkin seeds with almost any kind of spice. Here are a few suggestions: Keep it simple with butter and salt. Your pumpkin seeds will taste a little […]
