Of course, before you start carving them, you have to clean them out! This is the messiest part of pumpkin carving. If you’ve been dreading cleaning out your pumpkins, our Homer Glen crew has a few tips to make it a little easier.
Follow These Tips for Clean Pumpkins
Start with your hands.
You are going to get messy, but that’s half the fun! if you want to avoid the mess, pull on a pair of rubber gloves and go at it. Your hands are the best way to get the seeds out of your pumpkin, a vital first step if you plan on roasting them for a tasty fall snack. You can skip this step if you don’t have plans for the pumpkin seeds.
Use an ice cream scoop.
Metal ice cream scoops are a great pumpkin cleaning tool! They have a hard metal edge that’s made to dig into the flesh of the pumpkin, making it easier to scrape away all of the fibrous strings on the inside. It should leave a nice clean finish to your pumpkin without bruising it, helping it last as long as possible.
Some people choose to take their pumpkin cleaning to the next level with an electric drill bit! There are actually drill bits out there made for cleaning pumpkins. You may be able to find them at your local hardware store, Halloween supply store, or online. Simply attach them to an electric drill and you’ll have a clean pumpkin in under a minute. Just be careful not to get too close to the sides or you’ll end up bruising your pumpkin.
